We are a Norwegian couple who love travelling, and for the past 15 years we have travelled extensively by car – overlanding. Since we enjoy seeking out places off the beaten track, we have chosen a compact vehicle with good off-road capabilities, a Toyota Land Cruiser. First a Land Cruiser 80, and now a 78 with a pop-up roof. This means there is standing room in the back when the roof is raised, but it is still rather cramped. Our philosophy is that when we travel, we want to be outdoors, not sitting inside the vehicle. And we also like heading for warmer parts of the world than Norway.

We are not completely unfamiliar with a little luxury, though, and have also acquired a Hymer ML-T 570. A compact 4×4 motorhome. It does not have the same off-road capabilities as a Land Cruiser, but it is quite capable on easier off-road tracks. We also rent cars if it is to far away, as in Australia, Namibia and Argentina.

Overlanding is not just about covering as many miles as possible. An important part of the experience for us is having time to explore old cultural sites, enjoy local food and experience the culture and people of the countries we visit. We often travel together with our Swedish friends in SWES, the Swedish Expedition Society.

We also enjoy hiking, preferably in somewhat exotic destinations, and combine this with our road trips. There is enough sitting around in a car as it is.

Otto is also a passionate amateur mechanic who maintains our vehicles and has restored our vintage Land Cruiser 40.
